Bobrisky, Naira Abuse: Appealing Conviction, Seeking Option Of Fine

Idris Olanrewaju Okuneye, a.k.a. Bobrisky, is a cross-dresser who was found guilty and has requested that the Lagos Division of the Court of Appeal overturn the six-month sentence that Federal High Court Judge Abimbola Awogboro imposed on him. Bobrisky requested that the appellate court fine him N50,000 for each of the charges brought against him.   Judge Awogboro imprisoned Bobrisky for six months without offering him a choice after he entered a guilty plea to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission's (EFCC) four counts of naira abuse. The judge had ruled that the penalty ought to act as a disincentive to others who enjoy mistreating and disfiguring Naira.   However, not happy with the decision, the guilty claimed in his Notice of Appeal that the ADCJA's provisions allowed the trial court to impose a reduced sentence on the appellant, who had no prior criminal conviction history, but the appellant was entitled to a maximum term. According to him, the trial c...

JUST-IN: A judge orders a lawyer to provide substitute service for former governor Bello.

Fresh charges in the N80 billion fraud case brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against former Kogi State governor Yahaya Bello through his attorney Abdulwahab Mohammed were ordered to be served by the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday. The order was issued by Justice Emeka Nwite in response to an EFCC motion for substituted service on Bello. Kemi Pinheiro, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and the anti-graft agency's lead lawyer, presented the application. Bello, the immediate former governor of Kogi State, was represented by his attorney but was not present in court on Tuesday. A bench warrant was issued by Justice Nwite last week against Bello in response to an EFCC's application to that effect. According to reports, the bench warrant was in conflict with a legitimate order from the Kogi State High Court that prevented the former governor from being arrested or detained until the matter was resolved through notice.

Yahaya Bello: I'm scared of getting arrested by EFCC, but I'm eager to go in court.

Former Kogi governor Yahaya Bello claims he was afraid of being arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and so did not show up for his scheduled appearance before a federal high court in Abuja. Bello is being charged with 19 counts by the EFCC, which include suspected money laundering, breach of trust, and theft of N80.2 billion in cash. Bello did not appear in court on April 18, despite the fact that the arraignment was originally set for that day. Adeola Adedipe, one of Bello's attorneys, stated during the court session that it was resumed on Tuesday that although his client was prepared to appear in court, he was concerned about being placed under arrest. "The accused desires to attend to court, but he fears that an arrest warrant is pending against him," Adedipe remarked. He requested that the arrest warrant against the former governor, which was issued on April 17, be revoked by the court. Adedipe said that at the time the arrest warrant was i...

After the naira's recent increase vs the dollar, a 50 kilogram bag of rice now costs, on average, N67,000 in Lagos, Abuja, Ogun, and other places, down from over N90,000 in February 2024. Our correspondents reported that the staple was selling at a significantly lower price in border towns than it was in the cities. For example, a bag of rice was selling for about N49,000 or less in Ogun border communities like Imeko, Idiroko, Oja-Odan, and others. A bag of rice currently costs N42,000 in Saki, an Oyo State border hamlet, according to Ms. Mayowa Tosho. Our correspondent discovered that Compared to local brands, the prices of imported parboiled rice have decreased substantially. According to The PUNCH, former President Muhammadu Buhari outlawed rice imports via land borders in 2015. Rice should only be imported through seaports once all applicable duties have been paid, according to the Federal Government's Nigeria Customs Service. To encourage domestic production, the Central B...
