Dr. Ogbonnaya Orji, the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, revealed that in a span of nine years, the nation lost petroleum products valued at $1.84 billion from refineries. Orji made this statement on Monday during the 2024 NEITI board retreat/meeting opening ceremony in Lagos. He claims that between 2009 and 2018, oil theft caused the refineries to lose 4.2 billion liters of petroleum products. A daily estimate of 140,000 barrels was given for this.
