A discussion of Nigerian football history would be incomplete if it did not include mention of two prominent brothers who played for their country simultaneously and at different times.
Perhaps the greatest footballing duo in Nigerian history is the Uche brothers. The two captured the hearts of many Nigerians with their dashing green and white outfits, and at one stage they were regular names in the Super Eagles matchday roster.
Kalu Uche and Ikechukwu
In 2003, Kalu Uche scored his first goal in an African Nations Cup qualifying match against Angola. Four years later, Ikechukwu made his debut as a member of the Nigerian team that lost in the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals (AFCON).
While they were a member of the team Ikechukwu played 49 games for the Super Eagles, scoring 19 goals, while Kalu made 37 appearances and scored six goals. The majority of the pair's club career was spent in Spain. Ike Uche played for the team that won the 2013 AFCON.
Kanu, Christopher, and Nwankwo
The nickname "Papilo," or Nwankwo Kanu, is well-known among football supporters in Europe and Nigeria, particularly those who support Portsmouth, Ajax, and Arsenal.
With wins in the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, and Eredivisie, among other competitions, Papilo is the most decorated football player in Nigerian history. In 1996 and 1999, he was chosen as the African Footballer of the Year. Nwankwo made 86 appearances for the Super Eagles and was a major contributor to Nigeria's 1996 Olympic gold medal victory in Atlanta.
Possibly Austin, the greatest football player to have ever played for Nigeria, enthralled Nigerian supporters with his goals and on-field prowess. The more well-liked of the two, he has played for PSG, Frankfurt, Bolton, and Fenerbahce. In 1993, he made his Super Eagles debut against Ivory Coast in a 2-1 FIFA World Cup qualification match.
He was a crucial element of the 1996 team that won gold in the Olympic Games in Atlanta and was a member of the victorious AFCON 1994 squad. Austin scored 14 goals in 73 games as a Super Eagle.
Conversely, Emmanuel made very few appearances with the Super Eagles. He made seven appearances for the squad, but he only managed one goal.
John and Peter Utaka
renowned for his rapid speed, John played primarily for RC Lens, Rennes, Portsmouth, and Montpellier during his playing career. He joined the Super Eagles in 2002 and played in 43 games, tallying six goals. In the FIFA World Cups in 2002 and 2010, he played for Nigeria.
Peter stated in a 2020 interview that he decided to play for Nigeria rather than Belgium in order to realize his goal of playing with his older brother, John. For the Super Eagles, Peter made seven appearances.
Sam Sodje and Efe
The Sodje brothers, who were born in England, were Nigerian national representatives. Efe competed for Nigeria in the Korea/Japan World Cup in 2002. Sam made his Super Eagles debut in a 3-0 friendly loss to Romania and appeared in five games for the team.
