With effect from Sunday, March 17, 2024, the Lagos State Government has announced the opening of "Ounje Eko" food markets, which will sell necessities at reduced costs throughout the state.
This information is included in a statement signed by Gbenga Omotosho, the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, who also stated that Lagos residents will receive a 25% discount on staple foods such rice, beans, gari, bread, eggs, tomatoes, and pepper at the markets.
According to Omotosho, this will stop unethical behavior and guarantee that food reaches a lot of Lagosians. When the pilot program begins, a voucher system will be implemented.
He mentioned that food vendors and independent payment solution providers have been found and carefully chosen to operate.

"Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has ordered that food items be sold at a discount in all five divisions of Lagos starting on Sunday, March 17, 2024," according to the "Ounje Eko" food markets.
‘’The resident price of the food items, which include rice, beans, gari, bread, eggs, tomatoes, and pepper, will be reduced by 25%.
Residents will receive a 25% discount on food purchases.
According to Omotosho's comments,
"Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has ordered that food items be sold at a discount in all five divisions of Lagos starting on Sunday, March 17, 2024," according to the "Ounje Eko" food markets.
‘’The resident price of the food items, which include rice, beans, gari, bread, eggs, tomatoes, and pepper, will be reduced by 25%.
‘’When the trial program begins, a voucher system will be implemented to ensure that food reaches a wide number of Lagosians and to discourage sharp practices.
‘’To run the process, independent payment solution providers and food suppliers have been found and carefully chosen .. They will also give monitoring users access to real-time data on the exercise.
The item prices have also been provided for the sake of openness. A 5 kilogram bag of rice sells for N5,325 and a 1 kg bag for N1,065; a 5 kg bag of beans sells for N6,225 and a 1 kg bag for N1,245. The costs of additional basic food products will also be disclosed via different media channels.
‘’There are 27 markets in Ikeja, 6 on Lagos Island, 9 in Ikorodu, 5 in Epe, and 10 in the Badagry divisions.
‘’All Lagosians have been urged by Mr. Governor to collaborate with the operators at the various places, keep an eye on the procedure, and offer feedback via the official channels of the Government of Lagos State.
