The Nigerian federal government has finally reimbursed the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) employees for the unpaid 45-month basic salary arrears.
The failure to pay the arrears, which go back to 2019, has frequently put NiMet management in conflict with both the agency's employees and labor organizations.
The House Committee on Aviation Technology, along with their Senate counterpart, intervened and an agreement was reached on Sunday, May 19, 2024, during a special session called by the committee, which is chaired by Rt. Hon. Abiodun Isiaq. As a result, the unions decided to postpone their planned industrial action until Monday, May 20, 2024.
Akinlade, both union representatives and NiMet management were present.
In response to this event, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was praised by Prof. Charles Anosike, the director general of NiMet, for authorizing the payment of the arrears.
"Mr. President has once again shown that he is a worker-friendly president," he declared.
The President has resolved the lingering 45-month wage arrears, notwithstanding the fact that the matter predates this administration. I appreciate Festus Keyamo, the minister of aviation and aerospace development, for his contribution.Additionally, the members of the House Committee on Aviation Technology and its honorable chairman, Rt. Hon. Abiodun Isiaq Akinlade, for their prompt and selfless involvement. Additionally, I would want to express my gratitude to Senator Abdulfatai Buhari and the committee members. I express my gratitude to everyone who participated in the process in any way. We anticipate that employees and labor unions will express their gratitude to Mr. President by putting in a lot of effort and being committed to ensuring that NiMet fulfills its mission.
In the meantime, the DG/CEO of NiMet, Keyamo, the House of Representatives and Senate Committees on Aviation, and President Tinubu have all received gratitude from NiMet employees via the NiMet Unions Joint Action Committee (NJAC).
The union expressed their sincere gratitude for the collective effort in securing the payment of the outstanding minimum wage arrears owed to NiMet staff from 2019 to 2022 in a release dated August 12, 2024, and signed by Comrade Okechukwu Nwokoro, secretary, NJAC.
The association stated "This significant action has renewed our hope and commitment to serving the nation with excellence and has greatly alleviated the financial challenges faced by our workforce."
