The "End Hunger" protest organizers in Lagos have declared that they will recommence their demonstration in Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park, Ojota, on Monday, August 5, 2024, despite recent statements made by President Bola Tinubu.
In a statement released on Sunday, the group—signed by Hassan Taiwo, Ayoyinka Oni, and Adegboyega Adeniji on behalf of the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria Organizing Committee—expressed displeasure that President Tinubu took three days to address the public.
The declaration came after President Tinubu's earlier-in-the-day broadcast, during which he expressed concern about the protesters' problems and asked them to give up on their rallies in favor of communication.
The organizers declared, "We view the President's decision to address the nation as a significant victory for our movement." Upon During a live broadcast, a protester was struck.
We think it is impossible for the president to be complimenting and criticizing at the same time. "The President cannot hold a knife to our throat and simultaneously extend an olive branch," the three said.
Next, on Monday at 7 a.m., on the fifth day of the protests, the organizers extended an invitation to Nigerian youth and the general public to join them at Gani Fawehinmi Park.
In order to support them and not "stand idly by" while they are suppressed, they called on the Nigerian Bar Association, the Trade Union Congress, the Nigeria Labour Congress, and the media.
Even though the Lagos State government first described the rallies as peaceful, more recent footage has shown fights between protesters and law enforcement The organizers insist that the purpose of their demonstration is to voice the deep-seated frustration of ordinary Nigerians and to forward their demands for governance reform.
