Mourning Music Icon Onyeka Onwenu is the Art Minister

The demise of Nigerian music icon Onyeka Onwenu has shocked and saddened Barrister Hannatu Musa Musawa, Minister of Art, Culture, and Creative Economy.


Shortly after performing at a birthday celebration on Tuesday, Onwenu slumped and passed away.

The minister's special adviser for edia and publicity, Nneka Anibeze, signed a statement that was made available to LEADERSHIP Weekend. It said, "The music world has lost a shining star, a true legend, and a shaper of our cultural identity."


The void left by Onyeka Onwenu's passing will never be fully filled. Her inventiveness and capacity to unite people via her craft were demonstrated via her music.


The minister stated that the passing of Onyeka Onwenu will have a noteworthy effect on the music business.


"She has had an incalculable impact on fans and artists across generations. She was an inspiration, a mentor, and a trailblazer. For many years to come, the music industry will be shaped and inspired by her legacy.

The Minister also recognized Onyeka Onwenu's contributions to the growth of entertainment and music in Nigeria.


She was a real patriot who encouraged harmony, solidarity, and patriotism via her songs. Her influence will be felt for many years to come, and her music served as a reflection of our cultural values.


A suitable memorial to Onyeka Onwenu's life and legacy will be arranged in collaboration with the music industry's stakeholders by the Ministry of Art, Culture, and the Creative Economy.
