Gombe State Governor Mohammed Inuwa Yahaya declared that the new minimum wage of N70,000 must be implemented together with any necessary adjustments.
This was said by the governor over the weekend in an interview with State House reporters following a meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja with Senator Kashim Shettima, the vice president.
Governor Yahaya said that each state must follow the required procedure to ensure that the new minimum wage is implemented correctly due to the resultant adjustment, even though he indicated that a committee led by his deputy was already in existence for that purpose.
When asked if he was prepared for the new minimum wage to take effect, the governor responded, "Most States have committees established. The deputy governor is the head of a standing committee that has been in place in Gombe since 2020.
"According to the Senate President, they are collaborating with labor unions and all other members to ensure that we pass this legislation."
"Implementation normally has to go with consequential adjustment, and state has to go with the process properly so that we kick it and get it right," he responded when further questioned about the implementation in his state.
Remember that the previous N30,000 minimum pay ran out on April 18, 2024, and that the new minimum wage with the ensuing adjustment is anticipated to take effect by May.
